Welsberg/Monguelfo:
Gateway to the land of secrets, traditional shops, an elegant atmosphere in the valley
As many discoveries have proven, Welsberg's history can be traced back to the late Bronze Age, early Iron Age. The Romans erected a fort at Burgstall and built a settlement at the foot of it. Today the name can be traced back to the dynasty of the Welfsperchs who administered the region for the Count of Görz. In 1359 Georg of Welsperg drained the reservoir. The valley basin gained by this has been inhabited ever since then. The most famous son of Welsberg, Paul Troger (1698 – 1762), probably the best known baroque painter of Austria and South Germany, was born here. Welsberg has a lot to offer from a cultural point of view. You can walk through the village following in the footsteps of the famous artist Paul Troger, tour the castle with its old fences, replicas of animals and artistically shaped figures and pictures, go to art exhibitions and classical concerts in Schloss Welsperg, or to the remarkable range of shops where shopping becomes an adventure.
